Medical Assistant

Program Description
The objective of the Medical Assistant program is to prepare students for administrative and clinical occupations in medical clinics, in doctors’ offices, in long-term health nursing facilities, in regional and state hospitals, and in other medically related facilities. Graduates of this program may find entry-level employment as a receptionist, a coding and insurance clerk, a unit secretary, or in clinical applications such as taking vital signs, patient service care, phlebotomist, or administrative assistant. To meet this objective, students will learn anatomy and physiology, basic laboratory techniques, and clinical procedures relative to patient care and servicing. They will learn how to maintain computerized filing and inventory systems and be able to create correspondence using word processing software and access information using the Internet. Course work will consist of in-class lab and lecture and out of class homework. Homework may include special projects, reading, team projects, research, assigned reports and other activities outside of class and/or instructional hours. In-class lab and lecture, out-of-class homework and externships will each be assigned a portion of the final course grade. Out-of-class time for the Medical Assistant program is 270 hours.
