Healthcare Administrative Assistant

Medical Office Specialists

Program Description

The objective of the Healthcare Administrative Assistant program is to prepare students for entry-level administrative occupations in medical clinics, in doctor’s offices, in hospitals, and in other medically related businesses as well as in the general administrative career field.  Graduates of this program may find employment as medical secretaries, transcriptionists, receptionists, general office clerks, and first-line supervisors of administrative and office support workers. To meet this objective, students will learn how to perform a variety of medical office tasks including coding, billing, scheduling, and other non-medical clerical functions.  They will learn how to maintain computerized filing and inventory systems and be able to create correspondence using word processing software and access information using the Internet.

Course work will consist of in-class lab and lecture and out of class homework. Homework may include special projects, reading, team projects, research, assigned reports and other activities outside of class and/or instructional hours. In-class lab and lecture and out-of-class homework will each be assigned a portion of the final course grade. Out-of-class time for the Healthcare Administrative Assistant program is 180 hours.
